    Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion

    Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion

The Quiet Dance & Body Not Fit For Purpose

    Thu 2 Oct | 7.30pm | Full £10 | Conc £6 | Age 16+

The work of Burrows and Fargion radiates delight even as it makes the audience think. Over the past ten years the two artists have built a body of duets which mix the formality of classical music composition with an open and often anarchic approach to performance and audiences, bringing them a worldwide following. The Quiet Dance is an absurd confusion of movement and sound, where a simple walk becomes a call for help and looping rhythms build to an hysterical pitch. Body Not Fit For Purpose is their newest work, commissioned by the Venice Biennale and featuring 33 short table dances set to a series of non-conformist mandolin pieces.

The Quiet Dance and Body Not Fit For Purpose are supported by public funding through the National Lottery from Arts Council England. Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion are co-produced by Kaaitheater Brussels, PACT, Zollverein Essen, Sadler’s Wells Theatre London and BIT Teatergarasjen Bergen, and are currently in-house artists at th Nightingale, Brighton England.

“There are few performers who can hold an audience captive like this double act…
the timing of every note, shrug, laugh and gesture is awesome”
    ★★★★★ Judith Mackrell, The Guardian

    Moving and Experiencing

    Moving and Experiencing

    Somatics in theory and practice

    Sat, 9th Nov, 2013 | University of Chichester | Cost: £55 waged, £35 unwaged

This day of talks, workshops and performances promises to be the start of something exciting. Our aim is to bring together a range of professionals working in the field of somatic practices and arts-making in a series of research events to deepen our knowledge and practice, enabling new connections and possibilities. In this first event, we will run a series of taster workshops, show new dance performance research and offer a keynote talk on the mystical in somatic practices. Each workshop will be an introduction to a particular way of a working and we encourage participation in all the workshops in order to facilitate a deep and embodied awareness of the connections embedded in these practices. This embodied knowledge will then fuel our discussions about similarities, possible links, and differences. We hope this way of sharing our practices will give rise to deeper understandings amongst the respective practices as well as providing a meaningful experience for those considering a career in somatic practices.

This group of practitioners has been selected to make an initial offering to a further enquiry into the depth and breadth of dance and somatic practices both in and beyond Higher Education. We hope to run a series of these events and so if you are interested in offering a workshop for a a future event please contact j.bacon@chi.ac.uk

    Liz Aggiss

    Liz Aggiss, Survival Tactics

    Survival Tactics

    Thu 24 Oct 7.30pm Full £10 | Conc £6 | Age 15+

From a glamorous, blonde bombshell in high-heels to a pigeon toed, bow legged, oddball in big pants – Survival Tactics upturns the usual perception of the female stage body on its head. Inspired by Ausdruckstanz, with a fascination for grotesque dance, and a penchant for British music hall, Liz Aggiss pays comedic homage to her historical mentors, and herself, through a seamless fusion of movement, text and film.

“Liz Aggiss wowed us with her Survival Tactics, a bravura volley of agile mischief with ideas and limbs flying in brilliantly ridiculous directions”
    Mary Brennan Glasgow Herald.

    Flexer & Sandiland

    Flexer & Sandiland, Weightless

    Weightless

    Thu 10 Oct 7.30pm Full £10 | Conc £6 | Age 15+

Weightless is the brand new work from Flexer & Sandiland. Celebrating the company’s 20th anniversary Weightless, in a tongue in cheek way, references its own historical position. It questions the ‘weight’ of history, both personal and aesthetic: what is it that roots us down physically and emotionally? What might it feel like to let go or take flight?

Engaging and thoughtful, this show carries Yael Flexer’s recognisable stamp of witty text and wry humour combined with fast paced, space-hungry movement and a driving musical score by composers Dougie Evans and Karni Postel. A collaboration with Nic Sandiland, Weightless includes live digital projection and a sonic environment of disembodied voices and after images with text by Wendy Houstoun.

“Dance that is unforced, unaffected, charming and smart”
    Time out.

    PERFORMING PLACE SYMPOSIUM

Saturday 1st June 2013, Chichester University, Bishop Otter Campus, Chichester.
    9.30a.m. – 5.00 p.m.

The Dance and Performing Arts Department at Chichester University invite researchers, practitioners, artists and post-graduate researchers to a 1 day symposium that will explore, celebrate, problematize and articulate notions of experiencing, encountering, articulating and ‘performing’ place through creative arts inquiry.
The symposium will include installation and performance work, academic paper presentations, informal discussions and opportunities to engage in dialogue with colleagues interested in exploring practices and processes of experiencing and ‘performing’ place, and associated notions of (amongst others) site-specificity, embodiment, mobility, location, space, place and performativity.

The symposium aims to stimulate a sharing of knowledge and ideas in an informal, playful and participatory manner.

The event will take place on Saturday, 1st June 2013 at Chichester University, Bishop Otter Campus.
